Chris Staples and his colleagues at PNC Wealth Management are monitoring the Health Care Bill closely. Chris kindly suggested that readers interested in the bill visit the Kaiser Family Foundation’s site, which he reports has good tools for figuring out what is in the bill, as well as evaluating its impact on cost controls, employer requirements, etc. Chris is also gearing up for two really important things: (i) the Estate Planning Council of Louisville’s Annual Meeting (including golf and tennis activity options); and (ii) his vacation to Disney World, where strong rumor has it he will overlap with Wayne Wilson. All KYEstates has to say about that is: “Look Out, Orlando….”
At the March meeting of the Louisville Bar Association on Tuesday, April 23, Bernie Faller and Brian Borellis gave excellent presentations on Medicaid planning. The discussion covered a summary overview of Medicaid planning options, Medicaid eligibility requirements, first-party and third-party special needs trusts, and the Partnership Long Term Care Insurance Program. KYEstates readers who had to miss the meeting should contact Bernie (kyelderlaw {at} aol {dot} com) and Brian (bblex001 {at} aol {dot} com) for copies of their written materials, which were quite good. Thanks, guys, for putting together such a useful learning opportunity for the Louisville T&E Community!
Andy Arnold and his colleagues at UBS hosted a 2010 Economic Roundtable at The Olmsted on Tuesday, March 23, featuring Lee Spelman of JPMorgan, Dave Cohen of BlackRock, and Bill Stout of Robeco-Sage. To get copies of the written materials or to learn more about future seminars, you can reach Andy at andy {dot} arnold {at} ubs {dot} com.
John Shumate, Wharton graduate and the principal of The Meridien Group, a local financial advisory boutique, has entered into a partnership with Blue Equity. To learn more about Meridien’s M&A advisory and consulting services, you can contact John at shumate {at} meridien-group {dot} com.
After a distinguished career with First Kentucky Trust Company/National City/PNC, Don Wood is about to retire. Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs’s estate planning department hosted a lunch at Z’s Fusion in Don’s honor on Thursday, March 25. There was a strong turnout of old friends, happy to honor Don and wish him and Maida well on this transition. Guests included Matt Black, Linda Clark, Joel Wilson, Frank Hower, Larry Bailey, Carl Frazier, Sam Ronald, Jim Turner, John Ward, Rick Rowe, Bob Biggs, Chris Staples, and Brenda Blair. (Many of Don’s long-time clients also attended.) KYEstates believes turnout would have been equally strong even without the lure of the superb fish tacos on the menu. In the Louisville market, Don set the mark for excellence in the trust company wealth planner role for decades. Thank you and congratulations, Don, and we look forward to seeing you at the Delta regularly!
On Friday, March 26, Andy McKay and John Sweeney of bCatalyst Advisors, LLC held an impromptu gathering at O’Shea’s on Main Street to announce their new partnership with Hilliard Lyons. Jim Allen reports that the bCatalyst team will be part of an expanded investment banking group at Hilliard. O’Sheas has done a really nice job with their renovations, and it was a beautiful spring evening filled with a pint or two and good conversation with the many friends of bCatalyst and Hilliard Lyons that attended.
